Carrier oils are the foundation of topical skincare. They deliver active ingredients, restore lipid barriers, and determine how a product feels on application. Choosing the right carrier oil requires understanding two properties: absorption rate and comedogenic potential.
Absorption Rate
Absorption rate describes how quickly an oil penetrates the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin. Lighter oils with smaller molecular structures absorb faster. Jojoba oil, technically a liquid wax ester, absorbs rapidly because its molecular structure closely resembles human sebum. Grapeseed oil, rich in linoleic acid with a light viscosity, absorbs within minutes on most skin types. Heavier oils like castor oil and avocado oil sit on the surface longer, forming an occlusive layer that prevents transepidermal water loss.
Neither speed is inherently better. Fast absorption suits morning routines under sunscreen and makeup. Slow absorption suits overnight treatments where prolonged occlusion drives deeper hydration. The mistake is using a heavy oil when you need a light one, or dismissing a slow absorber when your routine calls for occlusion.
Comedogenicity
The comedogenic scale rates an oil from zero to five based on its likelihood of clogging pores. A zero means virtually no risk; a five means near-certain breakouts for acne-prone skin. Coconut oil, despite its popularity, rates a four. Wheat germ oil rates a five. Meanwhile, argan oil rates a zero, hemp seed oil rates a zero, and sunflower oil rates a zero to one.
The scale has limitations. It was developed using rabbit ear assays in the 1970s and 1980s, and human skin responds differently. Individual variation matters enormously: some people tolerate coconut oil without issue, while others break out from oils rated zero. Still, the scale provides a useful starting point for ingredient selection.
Pairing Strategy
Effective formulation pairs a fast-absorbing, low-comedogenic carrier with a slower, more occlusive one to balance immediate feel with lasting hydration. Our Warm Amber Body Oil blends jojoba as the primary carrier for rapid absorption with a smaller proportion of sweet almond oil for sustained moisture. Our Overnight Repair Cream uses avocado oil as the occlusive anchor alongside rosehip seed oil for its retinol content and fast absorption.
What We Disclose
Every Heliox Goods product page lists each carrier oil with its comedogenic rating, absorption speed classification, and source region. We believe this transparency lets you make informed choices based on your skin type rather than marketing claims.
