Building a Routine: Morning vs. Evening and Why Order Matters

A skincare routine is not a checklist of products applied in random sequence. The order in which you apply products determines whether active ingredients reach their targets or sit uselessly on top of each other. Morning and evening routines serve different physiological purposes, and the sequencing reflects those differences.

Morning Routine: Protection and Preparation

Your morning routine prepares skin for environmental exposure: ultraviolet radiation, pollution, temperature changes, and mechanical contact throughout the day. The guiding principle is to layer from lightest to heaviest consistency while finishing with sun protection.

Start with a water-based cleanser to remove overnight sebum production and any residue from evening products. Follow with a hydrating toner or essence if your skin tends toward dehydration. Apply any water-based serums containing vitamin C, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid. These lightweight formulations absorb quickly and deliver actives into the upper dermis before heavier layers seal them in.

Next, apply a lightweight moisturizer. For body application, a fast-absorbing oil like our jojoba-based body oils works well here because jojoba mimics sebum and integrates into the lipid barrier without leaving residue. Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen as the final step. Sunscreen must sit on top of all other layers to form an even protective film.

Evening Routine: Repair and Renewal

Your evening routine supports the skin’s natural repair cycle. Cell turnover accelerates during sleep, collagen synthesis peaks in the early morning hours, and transepidermal water loss increases in the absence of daytime humidity. Evening products should capitalize on these processes.

Begin with an oil-based cleanser or balm to dissolve sunscreen, makeup, and environmental deposits. Follow with a water-based cleanser for thorough removal of remaining residue. This double-cleanse method, borrowed from Korean skincare tradition, ensures a genuinely clean canvas for treatment products.

Apply targeted treatments: retinoids, chemical exfoliants, or concentrated serums that benefit from overnight contact time. Follow with a richer moisturizer or overnight mask that provides sustained occlusion. For body care, this is the time for heavier formulations like our shea and cocoa body butter, which creates an occlusive seal that prevents moisture loss during eight hours of sleep.

Consistency Over Complexity

A three-step routine applied consistently outperforms a ten-step routine applied sporadically. Start with cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Add one treatment product at a time, give it two weeks to show results, and adjust from there.
