Packaging Choices: Glass, Airless Pumps, and Why We Avoid Clear Containers

Packaging is not an afterthought in skincare formulation. The container that holds a product determines its shelf stability, its interaction with active ingredients, and ultimately whether what reaches your skin matches what left the production line. At Heliox Goods, every packaging decision follows the same principle: protect the formulation from the moment it is sealed until the moment it is applied.

Why Glass

Glass is chemically inert. It does not leach plasticizers, does not absorb essential oil terpenes, and does not react with acidic or alkaline formulations. Amber glass adds ultraviolet filtration, blocking the wavelengths that degrade photosensitive compounds like retinol, certain vitamin C derivatives, and many essential oil constituents. Our body oils and serums ship in amber glass bottles because the fatty acid profiles of cold-pressed oils remain stable behind glass in ways that plastic cannot guarantee over the same time period.

Glass has drawbacks. It is heavier, increasing shipping costs and carbon footprint. It breaks. We mitigate breakage risk with molded pulp inserts in our shipping boxes, and we accept the weight premium because the formulation integrity it provides is not negotiable.

Airless Pump Systems

Creams and emulsions face a different challenge. Every time you open a jar, you expose the product to air, introduce bacteria from your fingers, and allow volatile compounds to escape. Airless pump dispensers solve all three problems. A piston at the base of the container rises with each pump, collapsing the container volume and preventing air from entering the headspace. The product never contacts your fingers until it lands on your skin.

Our body butters and face creams use airless pumps made from recyclable polypropylene. The material is chosen for its compatibility with emulsion systems and its resistance to the surfactants and emulsifiers in cream formulations. Each pump delivers a metered dose, reducing waste and ensuring consistent application.

Why We Avoid Clear Containers

Clear packaging looks attractive on a shelf. It lets customers see the product color and consistency before purchase. It also transmits the full visible and near-ultraviolet spectrum directly into the formulation, accelerating the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, the degradation of antioxidant compounds, and the breakdown of naturally derived colorants.

A cold-pressed rosehip oil stored in a clear bottle on a bathroom shelf loses measurable tocopherol content within weeks. The same oil in an amber bottle retains its antioxidant profile for months. We choose function over shelf appeal because the product’s performance after purchase matters more than its appearance before it.

Sustainability Commitments

All Heliox Goods glass bottles are recyclable through standard municipal glass recycling. Our airless pumps are made from single-resin polypropylene, which is accepted by most curbside recycling programs. We do not use multi-material packaging that requires disassembly before recycling, and we do not use shrink sleeves that contaminate recycling streams.
